New Arrivals for September 4th Part 1

In continuation of last week's modifications to my updates, we will continue with monitoring movie theater releases, new DVD releases, Video Game releases, Comic releases, and now we will add in CD releases.

Movies:
1.  "A Walk in the Woods" - In this new comedy adventure, celebrated travel writer, Bill Bryson, instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife, and large and happy family, challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail - 2,200 miles of America’s most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine.  The peace and tranquility he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek - his long lost and former friend Katz, a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who, after a lifetime of relying on his charm and wits to keep one step ahead of the law – sees the trip as a way to sneak out of paying some debts and sneak into one last adventure before its too late. The trouble is, the two have a completely different definition of the word, “adventure”. Now they're about to find out that when you push yourself to the edge, the real fun begins.

2.  "The Black Panthers:  Vanguard of the Revolution" - The rise and fall of the Black Panther Party during the 1960s and beyond is a uniquely American story of a growing pride in black culture, and militant demands for justice and racial equality.  The film’s cast of larger-than-life personalities includes: Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Eldridge and Kathleen Cleaver, and Fred Hampton.  Director Stanley Nelson masterfully assembles rare archival footage that contextualizes the history of the Panthers – begun in response to racism and police brutality in Oakland, California.  Surviving members of the organization are interviewed alongside retired police officers, FBI informants, journalists, and others – all of whom reflect back in detail on the events that defined the Panthers’ turbulent late ‘60s era.  "The Black Panthers" does not hesitate to critique its subject, nor does it shy away from judging the corrupt activities of J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI or the countless shoot-outs, raids and arrests that were the response of local police. It is a vibrant chronicle of a pivotal movement and a history that needs to be told to understand today’s still incendiary racial landscape.

3.  "Before We Go" - The film follows the journey of two strangers stuck in New York City for the night. Starting as convenient acquaintances, the two soon grow into each other's most trusted confidants when a night of unexpected adventure forces them to confront their fears and take control of their lives.

4.  "The Transporter Refueled" - Frank Martin, a former special-ops mercenary, is now living a less perilous life - or so he thinks - transporting classified packages for questionable people. When Frank’s father pays him a visit in the south of France, their father-son bonding weekend takes a turn for the worse when Frank is engaged by a cunning femme-fatale, Anna, and her three seductive sidekicks to orchestrate the bank heist of the century. Frank must use his covert expertise and knowledge of fast cars, fast driving and fast women to outrun a sinister Russian kingpin, and worse than that, he is thrust into a dangerous game of chess with a team of gorgeous women out for revenge.

5.  "Chloe and Theo" - Theo, an Inuit from the Arctic, travels to New York City to warn world leaders about the catastrophic impact of global warming on the planet. Upon arrival he meets a homeless girl named Chloe, who has an unusual vigor for life, is mildly delusional, and completely obsessed by Bruce Lee. Together, they will save the world.

6.  "Dragon Blade" - A massive success this year in its native China, "Dragon Blade" brings action spectacle on a grand scale to US audiences. Featuring an international cast led by Jackie Chan, John Cusack and Academy Award-winner Adrien Brody, the film features the fight for the Silk Road when East and West collide. When corrupt Roman leader Tiberius (Adrien Brody) arrives with a giant army to claim the Silk Road, Huo An (Jackie Chan) and his group of trained warriors teams up with an elite legion of defected Roman soldiers led by General Lucius (John Cusack) to maintain the delicate balance of power in the region. To protect his country and his new friends, Huo An gathers the warriors of thirty-six ethnic nations together to fight Tiberius in an incredible epic battle. The film is directed by Daniel Lee ("Black Mask") and produced by Jackie Chan and Susanna Tsang.

7.  "Dirty Weekend" - During a layover in Albuquerque, work colleagues Les and Natalie discover more about each other than they ever thought possible. Anxious and irritable, Les is drawn back into the city by past experiences he can’t forget (even if he doesn't really remember the particulars of his previous drunken adventure). Natalie, refusing to leave his side, follows along as her own secrets are slowly revealed, leaving her feeling both vulnerable and unbound.

8.  "Break Point" - Jimmy Price is a reckless man-child on the last leg of his career as a doubles tennis player. When his latest partner drops him, he realizes he’s officially burned all of his bridges on the pro circuit. He decides to make one last ditch effort to revive his career, reaching outside of the tennis world and convincing his childhood partner -- his estranged brother Darren, now an apathetic substitute teacher – to team up with him. The mismatched pair, with the help of a unique 11-year-old named Barry, make an unlikely run at a grand slam tournament and are forced to re-discover their game, and their brotherhood.

9.  "Blind" - "Blind" focuses on Ingrid, a woman contending with the loss of vision. In trying to navigate a world without sight, she spends her days attempting to reconstruct the visual world as she once knew it. In an effort to maintain a connection to reality, she begins to write a sexually-charged story, whose fictional characters she can speak through.

10.  "Contracted Phase 2" - It’s spreading… After "Contracted" unleashed the world’s most horrifying virus, this sequel picks up the story as newly infected Riley races against time to contain the outbreak, even as it ravages his own body. As he digs deeper into its origins, Riley attracts the attention of a Detective who doubts his innocence, and BJ himself, who holds the key to the virus – and perhaps the destruction of mankind as we know it, leading to a blood-soaked finale you have to see to believe. Hang on to your barf bags, buckle up, and get ready for the genre ride of the year.

New Releases for August 28th part 1

I've been noticing that my viewings have been stagnating a little bit, so now I want to try something new.  It is still along the lines of reporting what is coming out across America, but will now include Video Game Releases, DVD Releases, and Comic releases.

Here are the new releases for the week of August 28th:
Movie Theaters:
1.  "No Escape" - August 26 - "No Escape" centers on an American businessman as he and his family settle into their new home in Southeast Asia.  Suddenly finding themselves in the middle of a violent political uprising, they must frantically look for a safe escape as rebels mercilessly attack the city.  "No Escape" stars Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan and Lake Bell.

2.  "Queen of Earth" - August 26 - A deeply unnerving psychological drama, the film traces the relationship between Catherine and Virginia, best friends who retreat to a lake house after Catherine’s father dies and her boyfriend leaves her.  Desperately seeking rest and recovery, when Catherine arrives at the cabin, she’s overwhelmed with memories of time spent at that same house with her boyfriend the year before and finds herself unable to decompress.  As Virginia begins spending increasing amounts of time with a local love interest, Rich, what was once closeness between the two women pivots toward hostility and resentment, sending Catherine into a downward spiral of delusion and madness.  "Queen of Earth" stars Elisabeth Moss, Katherine Waterston, and Patrick Fugit.

3.  "Z for Zachariah" - August 28 - In the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist, he’s nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel.  "Z for Zachariah" stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Chris Pine, and Margot Robbie.

4.  "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II - The Green Destiny" - Donnie Yen starring as Silent Wolf and Michelle Yeoh reprises her role as Yu Shu Lien. The screenplay is based on "Iron Knight, Silver Vase" by Wang Du Lu, book 5 in the "Crane-Iron Pentalogy" series, on which the original "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was based.  "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II" stars Michelle Yeoh, Donnie Yen, Harry Shum Jr, Jason Scott Lee, Roger Yuan, Eugenia Yuan, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo.
5.  "The Mend" - "The Mend" follows a mismatched yin-yang pair of NYC brothers, loose cannon Mat and put-upon Alan as they stagger dimly towards some understanding of love, women, masculinity and what it truly means to be a brother.  Featuring a gorgeous, minimalist score by Michi Wiancko & Judd Greenstein and beautiful, fluid cinematography by Chris Teague, the film unfolds as three stylistically distinct but interwoven acts, each with its own mesmerizing rhythm.  "The Mend" stars Josh Lucas, Stephen Plunkett, Lucy Owen, Mickey Sumner, Louisa Krause, Austin Pendleton, Sarah Steele, and Leo Fitzpatrick.
6.  "We Are Your Friends" - "We Are Your Friends" is about what it takes to find your voice.  Set in the world of electronic music and Hollywood nightlife, an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire.  All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James, who takes him under his wing.  Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James' much younger girlfriend, Sophie.  With Cole's forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he is destined for.  "We Are Your Friends" stars Wes Bentley, Zac Efron, and Emily Ratajkowski.

7.  "War Room" - The family-friendly movie explores the transformational role prayer plays in the lives of the Jordan family.  Tony and Elizabeth Jordan, a middle-class couple who seemingly have it all – great jobs, a beautiful daughter, their dream home.  But appearances can be deceiving.  In reality, the Jordan’s marriage has become a war zone and their daughter is collateral damage.  With the help of Miss Clara, an older, wiser woman, Elizabeth discovers she can start fighting for her family instead of against them. Through a newly energized faith, Elizabeth and Tony’s real enemy doesn’t have a prayer.  "War Room" stars Alex Kendrick, Priscilla Shirer, T.C. Stallings, Michael Jr., Karen Abercrombie, Alena Pitts, and Beth Moore.

8.  "Zipper" - Sam Ellis is a man on the rise -- a hotshot federal prosecutor on the cusp of a bright political future. But what was meant to be a one-time experience with a high-end escort instead turns into a growing addiction. His moral compass unraveling, his new demon threatens to destroy his life, family and career. "Zipper" stars Patrick Wilson, Lena Headey, Dianna Agron, Ray Winstone, John Cho and Richard Dreyfuss.
9.  "Turbo Kid" - "Turbo Kid" is a mad vision of future past, a BMX-riding 1997 post apocalypse with bright hair to combat grey sky. In a post-apocalyptic future, THE KID, a young solitary scavenger obsessed with comic books must face his fears and become a reluctant hero when he meets a mysterious girl named APPLE. Despite their efforts to keep to themselves, ZEUS, the sadistic and self-proclaimed leader of the Wasteland, plagues THE KID and APPLE. Armed with little more than blind faith and an ancient turbocharged weapon, THE KID learns of justice and friendship and embarks on an incredible journey to rid the Wasteland of evil and save the girl of his dreams.  "Turbo Kid" stars Munro Chambers, Laurence Laboeuf, and Michael Ironside.
10.  "I Touched All Your Stuff" - "I Touched All Your Stuff" tells the story of how Chris Kirk, a brilliant IT technician from Michigan, left a stable job in Olympia, Washington, moved to Bogotá, fell in love with a mysterious woman and ended up in a Brazilian jail for international drug smuggling. After reading about Pablo Escobar’s hippos in a magazine, and feeling that his life had reached a dead end, Chris Kirk bought a plane ticket to Colombia and decided to start anew in South America. On his first day in Bogotá, he met an alluring Japanese-Colombian woman named "V," and the two began an intense love affair that would culminate in his arrest in Brazil.
As Chris Kirk began to re-construct the story of his relationship with "V" from prison, he authorized both filmmakers to retrieve an 80 GB hard-drive that was in his friend's possession in the US. That drive supposedly contained the digital reminiscences of his life in Colombia -- and an outburst of videos, pictures, emails, chat exchanges and other data that would offer proof of his innocence and shed new light onto V's identity. Despite the new trove of evidence, no narrative proves to be fully verifiable, and the closer the filmmakers get to understanding the puzzle of Chris Kirk’s story, the more they struggle with his unique interpretation of events. In the process, Maíra Bühler and Matias Mariani seem to fall prey to a similar form of compulsion that drove Chris Kirk to Colombia in the first place.

11.  "7 Chinese Brothers" - In "7 Chinese Brothers," Larry, an inebriated sad sack who rides a tide of booze onto the shores of an undiscriminating Quick-Lube.  The only bright spot is probably his boss, Lupe.  Will Larry keep it together long enough to win the girl, provide for his French bulldog, laze about with his friend Major, and do his cantankerous grandmother proud?  "7 Chinese Brothers" stars Jason Schwartzman, Tunde Adebimpe, Olympia Dukakis, and Eleanore Pienta.
12.  "The Second Mother" - Val, a hard-working live-in housekeeper in modern day Sao Paulo. Val is perfectly content to take care of every one of her wealthy employers' needs, from cooking and cleaning to being a surrogate mother to their teenage son, who she has raised since he was a toddler. But when Val's estranged daughter Jessica suddenly shows up the unspoken but intrinsic class barriers that exist within the home are thrown into disarray. Jessica is smart, confident, and ambitious, and refuses to accept the upstairs/downstairs dynamic, testing relationships and loyalties and forcing everyone to reconsider what family really means.  "The Second Mother" stars Regina Casé and Camila Márdila.

New Movies for Aug 21st

Here are the upcoming releases for the week of August 21st:

1.  "Beltracchi:  The Art of Forgery" - 60 Minutes called Wolfgang Beltracchi a “con man of epic proportions” and dubbed him and his wife Helene, “the Bonnie and Clyde of the art world.” For nearly 40 years the charming and effervescent Beltracchi produced hundreds of meticulous works of art, forgeries of early and mid-20th century artists, using old canvases and distressed frames scoured from flea markets and paints whose pigments he ground himself. Amazingly, he didn’t reproduce known paintings, but, working in an artist’s style, would create entirely new “masterpieces.”

A large Max Ernst that took him three days to produce could easily fetch $5 million. Beltracchi was put on trial in 2011, but he readily admits that the handful of forgeries for which he was held accountable are just the tip of the iceberg. Many others remain on the walls of some of the world’s greatest art museums and private collectors. Filmmaker Arne Birkenstock, whose father was Beltracchi’s attorney, has unprecedented access to the controversial forger, capturing his unique personality: a bizarre mix of candor and cunning, insouciance and joie de vivre.

2.  "Shanghai" - In "Shanghai," an American returns to a corrupt Japanese occupied Shanghai during the Second World War to discover his friend's death. While unraveling the mysteries of this death and the seedy underbelly of Shanghai politics he discovers a much larger secret his own government is hiding.

3.  "Hitman:  Agent 47" - "Hitman: Agent 47" centers on an elite assassin who was genetically engineered from conception to be the perfect killing machine, and is known only by the last two digits on the barcode tattooed on the back of his neck. He is the culmination of decades of research – and forty-six earlier Agent clones -- endowing him with unprecedented strength, speed, stamina and intelligence. His latest target is a mega-corporation that plans to unlock the secret of Agent 47’s past to create an army of killers whose powers surpass even his own. Teaming up with a young woman who may hold the secret to overcoming their powerful and clandestine enemies, 47 confronts stunning revelations about his own origins and squares off in an epic battle with his deadliest foe.

4.  "The Curse of Downers Grove" - The town of Downers Grove looks like your average suburban neighborhood -- but Downers Grove has a disturbing secret.... For the past eight years, one senior from every high school graduating class has met a bizarre death right before graduation day. And this year, Chrissie Swanson (Bella Heathcote) has a terrible feeling that she is going to be the one to die. Can Chrissie survive the curse of Downers Grove or will she, like those seniors before her, fall prey to the town's deadly secret?

5.  "She's Funny That Way" - From renowned director Peter Bogdanovich, "She's Funny That Way" is a screwball comedy featuring the interconnected personal lives of the cast and crew of a Broadway production. When established director Arnold Albertson (Owen Wilson) casts his call girl-turned-actress Isabella “Izzy” Patterson (Imogen Poots) in a new play to star alongside his wife Delta (Kathryn Hahn) and her ex-lover Seth Gilbert (Rhys Ifans), a zany love tangle forms with hilarious twists. Jennifer Aniston plays Izzy’s therapist Jane, who is consumed with her own failing relationship with Arnold’s playwright Joshua Fleet (Will Forte), who is also developing a crush on Izzy.

6.  "Sinister 2" - The sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit horror movie. In the aftermath of the shocking events in “Sinister,” a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon of “Wayward Pines”) and her 9-year-old twin sons (real-life twins Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves in a rural house marked for death as the evil spirit of Buhguul continues to spread with frightening intensity.

7.  "Some Kind of Beautiful" - Richard (Pierce Brosnan) is a successful college professor who gives up a steady stream of one-night stands and beautiful undergrads for fatherhood with much younger Kate (Jessica Alba). Three years later when Kate falls in love with someone else and moves out, she sends her sister, Olivia (Salma Hayek), to make sure Richard is properly caring for their son. Assuming Richard is back to his irresponsible playboy lifestyle, Olivia is shocked when she starts to fall in love with him herself.

8.  "American Ultra" - "American Ultra" is a fast-paced action comedy about Mike (Eisenberg), a seemingly hapless and unmotivated stoner whose small-town life with his live-in girlfriend, Phoebe (Stewart), is suddenly turned upside down. Unbeknownst to him, Mike is actually a highly trained, lethal sleeper agent. In the blink of an eye, as his secret past comes back to haunt him, Mike is thrust into the middle of a deadly government operation and is forced to summon his inner action-hero in order to survive.

9.  "Learning to Drive" - Wendy (Clarkson), a successful and self-obsessed book editor, comes home to her New York City brownstone one day to find her husband Ted (Jake Weber, also appearing at the Festival in Hungry Hearts) leaving her — again. But this time it's for good, and Wendy's initial denial turns into grief, anger, and a hard determination to become self-sufficient. That means learning to drive so she can visit her daughter Tasha (Grace Gummer) at college in Vermont. Wendy's determination wavers when she's faced with the confusing reality of an automobile dashboard, but fortunately she has Darwan (Kingsley), the world's most conscientious driving instructor. As Darwan guides Wendy through her automotive education, his patience invites her to open up about her problems. In turn, Wendy's volatile feelings about her changing marital status serve to highlight Darwan's deeply private concerns about his own impending marriage, and their relationship evolves in unexpected and touching ways.

10.  "Digging for Fire" - Tim (Jake Johnson) and Lee (Rosemarie Dewitt) are married with a young child. The chance to stay at a fancy home in the Hollywood Hills is complicated by Tim's discovery of a bone and a rusty old gun in the yard. Tim is excited by the idea of a mystery, but Lee doesn't want him to dig any further, preferring that he focus on the family taxes, which he promised to do weeks ago. This disagreement sends them on separate and unexpected adventures over the course of a weekend, as Tim and his friends seek clues to the mystery while Lee searches for answers to the bigger questions of marriage and parenthood.

11.  "Grandma" - In "Grandma," Lily Tomlin is Elle Reid. Elle has just gotten through breaking up with her girlfriend when Elle’s granddaughter Sage unexpectedly shows up needing $600 bucks before sundown. Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash as their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets.

12.  "Mateo" - "Mateo" follows America’s most notorious gringo mariachi singer on his misadventures in Cuba. Matthew Stoneman dreamed of pop stardom. Instead, he went to jail, learned Spanish, and emerged as “Mateo,” America’s first white mariachi singer. Mateo is on the brink of completing an album of original songs in Havana. But his estrangement from friends and family, his criminal past, and his love for Cuban women could derail him on his quest for fame.

13.  "Guidance" - "Guidance" is about the downward spiral of a man who has no limits. David Gold, 36, a pathologically immature former child actor, has never been able to get over high school. Recently diagnosed with skin cancer, unemployed and with nothing left to lose, he fakes his resume and gets a job as a high school guidance counselor. Quickly winning over the students at Grusin High with his laidback attitude and similar interests, he befriends Jabrielle, a teenaged outcast and soon learns that sometimes you can go too far, especially when it comes to committing a ridiculous crime.

14.  "The Park Bench" - "The Park Bench" is a romance comedy about Emily, a neurotic librarian-to-be, assigned to tutor Mateo, a rogue Latino undergrad, struggling to pass American Lit. When she is assigned as his tutor, they agree (reluctantly) to meet three times a week on a park bench to study. At first they do not get along, but when the discussion turns from classics to confessions, they reveal secrets that could change their lives forever. Soon these two opposites learn that they have more in common than they ever could have imagined. Since Emily is engaged to be married, and Mateo has no shortage of girlfriends, the two are forced to tread carefully over their growing feelings for each other.

15.  "Being Evel" - In the history of sports, few names are more recognizable than that of Evel Knievel.  Long after the man hung up his famous white leather jumpsuit and rode his Harley into the sunset, his name is still synonymous with the death-defying lifestyle he led.  Notoriously brash, bold, and daring, Knievel stared death in the face from the seat of his motorcycle, but few know the larger-than-life story of the boy from Butte, Montana.
After an adolescence riddled with petty thievery and general rabble-rousing, Knievel set his sights on superstardom, a feat he achieved when televisions around the world aired the startling crash footage of his 1967 attempt to jump the fountains at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The jump was spectacular, but the failed landing that sent him skidding like a ragdoll across the asphalt was the main attraction. Throughout the 1970s, his legacy as King of the Daredevils spawned action figures, movies, and a generation of kids who wanted to be just like Evel.  "Being Evel" stars
Evel Knievel, Johnny Knoxville, Mat Hoffman, George Hamilton, and Tony Hawk.

New Movies for Aug 14th

Here are the movies to be released during the week of August 14th:

1.  "How to Smell a Rose:  A Visit with Ricky Leacock in Normandy" - (Limited Release Aug 12) Ricky Leacock, Al Maysles, Robert Gardner, Robert Drew, Les Blank: the generation that invented cinema verité and gave us a plethora of brilliant documentaries is passing away.  Les Blank’s warm and moving portrait of Leacock and partner Valerie Lalonde in France includes marvelous clips of Leacock’s movies, including his earliest film, "Canary Bananas," made at age 14 on his father’s Canary Island plantation.  Leacock is as charismatic recalling his cinematic triumphs (shooting Flaherty’s "Louisiana Story," filming Leonard Bernstein in Israel), as he is explaining why he quit drinking or quoting Escoffier on the making of a perfect bouillon.

2.  "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." - Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin.  Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology.  The duo's only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.  "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." stars Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki, Jared Harris, and Hugh Grant.

In the high-stakes pursuit of big-wall climbing, the Shark's Fin on Mount Meru may be the ultimate prize. Sitting 21,000 feet above the sacred Ganges River in Northern India, the mountain's perversely stacked obstacles make it both a nightmare and an irresistible calling for some of the world's toughest climbers. In October 2008, renowned alpinists Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk arrived in India to tackle Meru. Their planned seven-day trip quickly declined into a 20-day odyssey in sub-zero temperatures with depleting food rations. Despite making it to within 100 meters of the elusive summit, their journey, like everyone before them, was not a successful one. Heartbroken and defeated, the trio returned to their everyday lives, where the siren song of Meru continued to beckon. By September 2011, Anker had convinced his two lifelong friends to undertake the Shark's Fin once more, under even more extraordinary circumstances than their first attempt. "Mere" is the story of that journey, an expedition through nature's harshest elements and one's complicated inner demons, and ultimately on to impossible new heights.
